James boasts over three decades of experience in the world of sales.
Hailing from a lineage of entrepreneurs, it was probably inevitable that he'd find his calling in the field of sales. His journey commenced during his teenage years in Jamaica, where he ventured into the unglamorous world of selling embroidery kits to pharmacies and gift shops. Despite it not being the typical teenage pastime, this early endeavour offered invaluable lessons – conquering fears, stepping outside one's comfort zone, identifying prospects, canvassing, negotiation, and dealing with objections.
With growing experience, James transitioned into assisting the family business. His tasks included reaching out to supermarkets and hotels, persuading them to purchase farm produce, fresh seafood, and coconut cream.
Fast forward to age twenty; James, now working full-time at a Jamaican bank, seized an opportunity to earn extra income. He opened a weekend Jerk chicken stall, satisfying the taste buds of colleagues, friends, neighbours, and the local community. This side hustle supplemented his bank income and funded essential items for a young, socialite-about-town - football boots, clothes, parties, and beer. His passion for "Jerk" and BBQ cooking endures, occasionally making a guest appearance at his brother's restaurant and catering business.
Those early lessons in politeness, persistence, and resilience when faced with rejection laid the groundwork for recognizing the importance of influencing, networking, referrals, and word of mouth. Later, these skills were finely honed through a diverse career spanning telesales, party promotion, double glazing sales (Everest), and car sales (Renault).
Following that, James embarked on two spells with Inkjet Office Print Product manufacturers. His 13-year tenure at Riso, marked by ascending through the Direct channel, Sales Management, and Sales Training and Coaching roles, led to a stint in Dealer sales. The latter demanded a consultative approach, emphasizing influencing and mentoring. James excelled, even earning international acclaim in Japan for ranking among the top 3 globally for sales performance.
The penultimate chapter involved an exhilarating challenge to bolster another global manufacturer, Epson, in their quest to expand their Office Print market share. His years of industry experience and relationships nurtured over time were vital to this success. James's contribution to Epson's year-on-year growth stands as another personal triumph. During his almost 6 year stint with Epson, he gained invaluable experience by venturing into "the channel" through distribution for the first time, further enriching his skillset.
In 2023, James took the leap to establish his consulting venture, James AG Smith Consulting. Known as a seasoned sales expert, James is always eager to share his knowledge and insights. His logical progression into Business Development Consultancy aims to help businesses leverage his unique skill set.
